THE ABYSS

This project was a sculptural exploration of the natural world, familiar yet uncanny, where forms shifted between reality and pareidolia, inviting viewers to question what they perceived. The Abyss reflected on the fragile, ephemeral qualities of nature, celebrating the overlooked beauty and utility of wild urban flora, and framing its cycles of growth and decay as simultaneously whimsical and transient.

Conceived as a temporary sculpture, it was composed of thousands of individually foraged ivy leaves, carefully layered and sculpted to evoke movement and transformation. Each element interacted with light and space, creating a subtly shifting environment that blurred the line between recognition and imagination.

The Abyss embodied Winter’s ongoing investigation into perception, pareidolia, and the quiet interplay between form, light, and the observer.
